Jeffrey Coy began his undergraduate athletic career at Widener University in Chester, PA as a member of their NCAA Division III Champion Football program. He was one of 2 freshmen selected to the Varsity squad- playing as a defensive back and a record-setting field goal kicker. At the end of his sophomore year, he transferred to Marietta College in Ohio to pursue a Sports Medicine Degree. Upon arrival to Marietta, he was introduced to the sport of Rowing. While at Marietta, Mr. Coy rowed as a Novice, Varsity Lightweight & Varsity Open weight athlete. His accolades while attending Marietta include – Gold Medal Novice Lightweight 8+ Dad Vail Regatta National Championships, Men’s Rowing Team Captain 2 years and the inaugural recipient of the Ralph Lindamood Outstanding Oarsman Award.
Academically, Mr. Coy graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Medicine. He was President of the campus chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa – National Leadership Honorary Society, as well as, serving in other campus leadership positions. Immediately following graduation he was accepted to join the Harvard University Men’s coaching staff as an Intern Coach for his first year and was subsequently retained as an assistant coach to the Men’s freshman heavyweight program and assistant Boatman for approximately 3 years.
Mr. Coy mentored under legendary Coach Harry Parker as an Assistant Coach with the Men’s Heavyweight Team. He studied in all facets of Coaching – recruiting, training, racing, scheduling, safety, boat repair/rigging, regattas/racing and officiating. He assisted in coaching National Championship winning crews at the Eastern Sprints, Head of the Charles, Empire State Games, the Harvard – Yale Race and accompanied crews internationally to the Henley Royal Regatta. While at Harvard, he personally trained in the 1x, 2- and occasional 8+’s rowed out of Newell Boathouse and competed in Marathons, Triathlons including the renowned “Newell Boathouse Triathlon”.
Mr. Coy is a graduate of the inaugural USRowing Coaching College; he is a certified USRowing Level II and Level III Coach and many years of continuing education coursework at US Rowing Advanced Coaching Education camps and classes. He is currently President of a Youth Rowing Non Profit in Alabama and the Southeast Youth Rowing Regional Coaches Representative for Alabama and Mississippi. He has earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Sports Medicine and maintains certifications in CPR, First Aid, BBP, AED and is USOC “SafeSport” Certified. Mr. Coy has held positions as the Youth Program Director/Head Youth Coach Rocket City Rowing Club in Huntsville, AL; Executive Director/Coach with Smoky Mountain Rowing Center/East Tennessee Rowing and Youth Head Coach with Lake Guntersville Rowing Club. During his time with all programs he and his assistants grew the program numbers on average by 30-50% per year, fundraised for equipment purchasing, achieved success at both Regional and National levels and assisted numerous athletes in receiving athletic scholarships to some of our country’s premier Colleges and Universities.
Presently, Mr. Coy is the Founder, Director and Head Coach at Huntsville-Madison County Rowing & Watersports in Huntsville, Alabama. Utilizing his 20 years of business ownership/development experience, as well as, multiple years of service in corporate manufacturing – executive staff, customer service and logistics management, he is building a successful, community impacting, rowing & watersports operation.
Personally, Mr. Coy has been blessed with a wife and best friend of 21 years and 2 wonderful boys ages 15 and 17. He is an active member of a local church, an enthusiastic soccer, and rowing parent. In addition to enjoying time with his family, he is a certified pilot, trained in martial arts, a certified scuba diver, and an avid reader.
